Harambee Square

Project Description

Renovated in 1994, Harambee Square is RMECDC’s first project. It is a $3 million downtown historic preservation and low-income housing tax credit development investment. Harambee Square consists of 30,650 square feet of mixed-use development designed into 11,800 square feet of commercial/retail space and 18,850 square feet of residential space.

There are nine commercial tenants on the first level and 24 units of housing for the elderly on the second and third floors. Adjacent to Harambee Square is a 5,000 square foot courtyard and partially completed Public Arts building.

Future Development Plan

Future improvements to Harambee Square include cosmetic and weatherization rehabilitation consisting of painting, new windows and doors, HVAC, and security systems

Housing Counseling Center

Since 1995, RMECDC’s Housing Counseling Center has provided homebuyer education, financial literacy education, one-on-one pre-purchase counseling, and foreclosure prevention counseling.
